Having spent the best part of 40 years looking through a viewfinder of a stills or video camera, sitting in front of a computer editing photos or videos, producing websites and managing content and social media accounts for organisations or individuals, it’s a very strange feeling to now say “I’m retired".

Despite no longer taking on commercial paid work, it’s virtually impossible to suddenly stop what you’ve been doing for the best part of your working life so, for the past few years I’ve been taking on work on a ‘pro-bono’ basis for church, charity or voluntary organisations. I hope that my experience, skills and equipment can now be put to good use by those who perhaps, don’t have the budget or funding to produce what they want or need for their media requirements.

Now this is clever...

There’s no doubt, the ‘phrase’ of the moment is AI, you hear it every day in some context or another and, for the most part, it’s use and application can aid life in general.

I’ve just used AI to re-write that opening statement as I felt it was not quite right! - it came up with this: “AI is undeniably the buzzword of the moment, frequently cropping up in daily conversations. For the most part, its applications can enhance our lives”.
The point to all this? I came across an App yesterday which I thought was worth buying, sort.photos.

This App can take a folder of images, numbered as they have come out of a camera and automatically rename them with a description, it can use up to 8 words in the description, in several different languages and use custom spaces.

If it finds similar images it’ll add a 1 or 2 etc. If you don’t specify a new location, it will overwrite the current filename with the new descriptive name, the latest update supports jpg, DNG, TIF and RAW files.

In practice I used just 2 english words per photo (see screenshot), using descriptive filenames will certainly help if you use any form of indexing or cataloguing software like Neofinder. The App does require and use, an Internet connection and is only available for Apple Mac users (sorry Windows people!).

It’s available from the Apple App Store and costs £3.99 for 1000 images or £19.99 for 5000 images.

There is a short video explaining how to use the App from the Developer here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSVys1Acses
