Having spent the best part of 40 years looking through a viewfinder of a stills or video camera, sitting in front of a computer editing photos or videos, producing websites and managing content and social media accounts for organisations or individuals, it’s a very strange feeling to now say “I’m retired".

Despite no longer taking on commercial paid work, it’s virtually impossible to suddenly stop what you’ve been doing for the best part of your working life so, for the past few years I’ve been taking on work on a ‘pro-bono’ basis for church, charity or voluntary organisations. I hope that my experience, skills and equipment can now be put to good use by those who perhaps, don’t have the budget or funding to produce what they want or need for their media requirements.

AI for Logo design?

Stacks Image 1345
I had a conversation with a good friend recently about AI, he was interested in creating a new logo for his website and I suggested that tools like Gemini or ChatGPT could probably design something. However, he mentioned he’d tried a similar route recently but found the results disappointing.

I mentioned the key to obtaining a good result from AI is crafting a well worded prompt - it was no use just entering “make me a logo for my business called ‘anybusiness.com”, AI needs to know a lot more about what you actually want, I used an example of ‘describe to a child who doesn’t speak English’ what you want and to then use that as a prompt in ChatGPT or Gemini.

Later, when I got home, I was thinking about all the ways he could construct a descriptive prompt. This led me to an interesting idea: what if I asked Gemini (or ChatGPT) to ‘suggest a prompt to design a new logo,’ and then used that AI-generated prompt to create the actual logo?

Gemini came back with the following:

“Okay, here’s a versatile prompt structure you can adapt to design a new logo. You’ll want to fill in the bracketed information with your specific needs:

General Prompt Structure:

“A [Style Adjective 1, e.g., minimalist, modern, vintage, playful, corporate] and [Style Adjective 2, e.g., elegant, bold, abstract, geometric] logo for a [Type of Business/Product/Service/Brand, e.g., tech startup, coffee shop, personal brand, eco-friendly product] named ‘[Your Brand Name (Optional)]’. The design should feature [Key Elements/Imagery/Symbols, e.g., a stylized letter ‘S’, a mountain peak, an abstract wave, a coffee bean icon, a combination of geometric shapes]. The primary colors should be [Color 1] and [Color 2], with accents of [Accent Color (Optional)]. The logo should be clean, memorable, and suitable for [Intended Use, e.g., website favicon, app icon, branding materials, print].”
It followed with a suggested example that could then be modified to suit a particular brand or business name:

Examples of how to use it:

”A modern and minimalist logo for a tech startup named ‘InnovateX’. The design should feature a stylized abstract representation of a neural network or interconnected nodes. The primary colors should be deep blue and silver, with accents of electric teal. The logo should be clean, memorable, and suitable for a website favicon and app icon.”

The reply then finished off with :

“Tips for a better logo prompt:

Be Specific: The more details you provide, the closer the AI can get to your vision.
Keywords are Key: Use strong descriptive words for style, elements, and colors.
Consider the Mood/Feeling: Do you want it to feel trustworthy, innovative, fun, sophisticated?
Think About Application: Where will this logo be used most? This can influence design choices (e.g., simplicity for small icons).
Negative Prompts (Optional but helpful for some tools): You can also add what you don’t want, e.g., “no cursive fonts,” “avoid overly complex details.”
Choose the elements that best fit your needs and good luck with your logo design!”

I’ll pass the information on to my friend and see what he comes up with.

Postscript - I fed the following prompt into ChatGPT “produce an image to describe the use of AI to generate a logo”- It’s the image used above!
