Having spent the best part of 40 years looking through a viewfinder of a stills or video camera, sitting in front of a computer editing photos or videos, producing websites and managing content and social media accounts for organisations or individuals, it’s a very strange feeling to now say “I’m retired".

Despite no longer taking on commercial paid work, it’s virtually impossible to suddenly stop what you’ve been doing for the best part of your working life so, for the past few years I’ve been taking on work on a ‘pro-bono’ basis for church, charity or voluntary organisations. I hope that my experience, skills and equipment can now be put to good use by those who perhaps, don’t have the budget or funding to produce what they want or need for their media requirements.

Calibrite Video Checker

Colour chart
Recently, I posted about using ‘Shot Match’ in Davinci Resolve 18 and how it managed to match the colour on a 2 camera shoot, a cameraman friend of mine read the post and mentioned he’d just bought the Calibrite ColorChecker Passport Video card (£159.59) and he suggested I look at obtaining one.

I made it to IMDb!

oxenhall title screen

https://youtu.be/coCvDQRbP9c

This was an eighteen month project for Oxenhall Parish History Group to celebrate the one hundred year anniversary of the sale of the Onslow Estate in Newent Gloucestershire. With an excellent voice-over by Chris John, it was co-produced by Van Goulding and Gwen Tutt and featured local residents of Oxenhall, Newent, Gloucestershire. A book was also produced to go with the DVD.

The DVD was originally produced in standard definition, after finding the edited master in HD recently, I thought it should be uploaded to YouTube. Not quite sure how, but this video got an IMDb entry! - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3956748

I shot most of the early footage on a JVC HD100HD and later, a JVC HM700HD with some footage shot by Van Goulding on a Sony Handycam. It was one of the last projects I edited on Apple's Final Cut Pro 7 before switching to Apple Final Cut Pro X.

Teleprompter

autocue
The rise in technology is now so fast paced, that with a small financial outlay and a few hours spent watching tutorials on YouTube, it’s possible for anyone with an HD or 4K capable camera, a reasonable quality microphone and streaming hardware (or software) to broadcast a high quality video live to the world.

Having the technology is one thing but being able to talk confidently to your audience without having to look down and refer to notes is another, this is where the use of an autocue or teleprompter comes in.

Moving to 4K

video shoot in field
Just recently, I had the chance to buy a new camera, a JVC HM170. I’m not sure what prompted me to browse eBay that day, previously I’d browse eBay almost daily but for many months I’d not bothered.

I’ve always been a JVC fan, I’ve previously used a JVC HM700 HD camera with a JVC HM100, before that I had a JVC HD100, I still have a JVC BR-HD50 edit machine for my old DV and DVCAM tapes to playback into Final Cut Pro / Blackmagic Resolve. The JVC HM170 is 4K, I’d been looking for a smaller camera but with higher quality output and the HM170 looked to be a good choice.

How times change!

VHS still
Just recently I’ve been digitising some of our old tapes to hard drive before they deteriorate and the machines are no longer available to play them. One tape I came across from 1996 was called “Looking at Digital Shooting and Editing” it was produced by a good friend of ours from our early days in video, Gwynne Williams from Usk.

Recce becomes a shoot

A member of our Chapel recently expressed an interest in doing some ‘Mini Messages’ for the Chapel YouTube page. He asked about using ‘cue cards’ and I explained I had a Datavideo TP-300 autocue unit, he’d not seen one in use so suggested I visit his location to do a demo.

He sent me his script which I loaded to iCue on full size iPad, when I arrived and showed him how easy it was to read his script while looking at the camera, he asked if I could shoot the piece there and then.

A Band shoot...

video shoot
Over the past 20 years or so we’ve been asked to shoot a few artist / band songs, these usually involved shooting several takes in different locations and using a CD boom box to play the song out for lip syncing, then in the edit, use the CD as the main audio track to sync to the video using the recorded audio, then drop the camera recorded audio for the final video output.
